UsSEARCH was founded in 1989 by a coalition of ecumenical congregations representing diverse ethnic, social, and spiritual backgrounds. They responded to the overwhelming need for critical support services for the homeless and concentrated on one question:
How do you empower an individual to focus beyond mere survival, and work toward a happy, healthy, and most importantly, independent life?
SEARCH has become the leading homeless service provider in our community, serving more than 10,000 men, women and children each year. We are unique in that we serve all segments of the homeless population: the sons and daughters of the welfare generation, the unskilled laborers, the substance abusers, the battered and abused, and the mentally and physically handicapped. Former business professionals and "those who never dreamed it could happen to them" are also our clients.
The hallmark of the SEARCH mission is its flexibility and focus on the needs of each individual. We have evolved into a comprehensive program that offers job training, job placement, housing, education, medical support, outreach and childcare, in addition to providing basic life saving services.
Today, the challenges we face are substantially greater than those of the past. Lack of affordable housing, reduced public assistance, health insurance cutbacks, wages not keeping up with the cost of living are all contributors to increasing the homeless population.
Homelessness is an urgent crisis. SEARCH has accomplished a great deal. But much more must be done. By providing the opportunities and resources to change the lives of the homeless today, we will be investing in our community’s quality of life tomorrow.
