Houston, We Can Help SEARCH 2008 Annual Luncheon a Huge Success!
Over 450 SEARCH supporters gathered at the Westin Galleria Hotel on January 18th to hear featured speakers Ron Hall and Denver Moore, co-authors of the phenomenal book Same Kind of Different As Me, tell the story of their unlikely friendship. The two men addressed the crowd and moved many to tears – so much so that we collected over $17,000 cash at the door - a first for SEARCH!
The luncheon’s theme was ‘Houston, We Can Help,’ chaired by John Guess, Jr., President of The Guess Group, and raised $200,000. Also on hand was Channel 13’s Melanie Lawson, who emceed the event. A special thanks to SEARCH board member John Knox, Jr., President and CEO of SureTec Financial, for donating a copy of “Same Kind of Different As Me“ for each of the luncheon guests. The recipient of the 2008 Founder's Award was Noah Rattler, a volunteer with SEARCH's Mobile Outreach team. Noah took “A Walk in Their Shoes,” an amazing 1,800 walk from Houston to Los Angeles to raise awareness about the issue of homelessness.
This year marked the first time SEARCH used public service announcements to raise awareness about the issue of homelessness during the time leading up to the luncheon. A huge thanks to SEARCH supporters Tracy McGrady of the Houston Rockets, SEARCH Founder Shelly Cyprus, and The Rev. Dr. William A. Lawson, Pastor Emeritus of Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church and Michela Aguirre, for appearing in the four PSAs, which aired on both English and Spanish speaking channels.
Thank you also to our major sponsors for the event: Sterling Bank, SureTec Financial, and AIG. We are also appreciative of the sponsorship we received from other corporate, foundation, congregational and individual donors as well as event volunteers and organizers who helped to make this year’s luncheon a huge success. We hope everyone will join us again next year!
Monday Night Bridge
In 1965, a group of women began meeting once a week to play bridge. They were new residents of Houston as their husbands transferred here to work at Foley Brothers. From the beginning, they pitched in weekly to support a charitable cause. Starting out at $.25, they now collect $2.00 a person per week. In the few years since they have chosen SEARCH as the beneficiary of their charitable collection, they have sent over $3500.00 to SEARCH. Way to go ladies! Monday Night Bridge consists of: Gloria Herman, Fanette Blum, Helen Rosenblaum, Bettye Freundlich, Hanni Orton
Girl Scout Troop #18242 and Girl Scout Troop #17298
We would like to thank Girl Scout Troop #18242 for coming and making sandwiches here at SEARCH for the Mobile Outreach program. It was great speaking to them and spending time with the volunteers of the future. Girl Scout Troop #17298 worked in the clothing room, folding the clothes that were donated to SEARCH.
Emery Weiner School, St. Luke's UMC, and Woodland UMC
The year has started off well with volunteers coming to SEARCH. The Emery/Weiner School spent one week with us, volunteering in multiple areas. St. Luke’s UMC came out on a Saturday and cleaned the resource center. We were also visited by the Woodland UMC who helped by washing walls and base boards.
What's Cookin' at SEARCH?
For the past several months a growing trend is catching on in the kitchen at SEARCH Homeless Center. At 7:30 am each weekday morning, a different crew of faith-based volunteers appear at the kitchen door ready to prepare and serve our clients. These generous folks are members of various organizations around Houston. Each group has committed to being responsible for the lunchtime meal on a particular day each month. On “their day,” the organization provides 4-8 volunteers and contributes $250 to feed the approximately 180 people who come to eat a hot meal at SEARCH.
If your organization is interested in volunteering, please call our Volunteer Coordinator, Joseph Benson, at 713-276-3060 to reserve a date for your group.
Homeless Voter Registration We’ve all heard the old saw, “Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach him to fish and you’ve fed him for a lifetime.” The League of Women Voter’s (LVW) Voter Registration program has taken this to heart and has, over the past year, looked for ways to encourage citizens, groups, institutions, and organizations to begin and sustain home grown voter registration programs.
In early January two organizations approached the LVW about helping them develop voter registration programs for a largely underserved population, Houston’s homeless. Rob Houk, Coordinator for Guest Registration at The Beacon, and Joseph “Cowboy” Benson, Volunteer Coordinator from SEARCH and Chair of the consumer Advisory Board for Health Care for the Homeless – Houston, wanted help organizing and implementing voter registration events at their respective service centers. All agreed to work together to register voters who are members of the homeless/street community of Houston, initiating an ongoing effort directed at helping rebuild dignity by giving voice to these citizens in need.
On January 14th, Ann Wood and Linda Cohn of the LVW came equipped with signs, clip boards, pens, voter registration applications, and demonstration e-slates. They were joined by volunteers to offer voter registration and information to clients at The Beacon and SEARCH. At both locations, clients lined up to register to vote and to try their hand at using the e-slate, many for the first time. These citizens were pleased and excited at having an opportunity to vote; some had never registered to vote before while, for others, it was an opportunity to reclaim something valuable from their pasts. They asked a lot of questions about becoming more informed and about where they would be voting. 145 citizens registered to vote that morning. Many more stopped and talked.
Volunteers at SEARCH held a second voter registration event registering another 35 new voters. Both organizations plan further events over the summer in preparation for the General Election in November. The LWV Voter Registration Program has promised continued support by providing “Voters Guides” to both locations, sending them voting information such as early voting maps and information on mail-in ballots to post on communal information boards, and generally offering organizational support as required.
Registering these new voters was exciting and rewarding but it is even more rewarding to know that members of these communities will continue this work for their neighbors. LWV volunteers shared their know-how on organizing and implementing a voter registration effort with the goal of developing self-perpetuating programs at each facility. We are confident that with Mr. Houk’s and Mr. Benson’s continued leadership, voter registration will become one of the many services regularly available at these facilities and that the practice will eventually be offered at all of the downtown shelters. As always, the LWV Voter Registration program is ready and willing to assist.

SEARCH has brought you stories of men, women, and children who have gotten off the streets and into permanent and affordable housing, finally making their way from homelessness to self-sufficiency. Sometimes, the stories come from the client's case managers; sometimes the stories come in the form of letters from the former client, thanking our staff for helping them. This story came in the form of a phone call. Last week, Michael O'Connor, a former client of SEARCH's Mobile Outreach program, called to see if a few of the people he knew from 10 years ago still worked there. Sometimes it takes years, but many of the clients SEARCH has helped come back to say thanks and to see what they can do to help others like them. Mr. O'Connor has chronicled his life on the street in a series of blog entries. Here is an opportunity to read about one man's life on the street, and how he got his life back. http://360.yahoo.com/asmikeocsit
